Commendation of Robert (Bob) Cherny
AS-2670-04/San Francisco/EX - May 6-7, 2004
WHEREAS, Bob Cherny has for many years served his campus,
his discipline of history, and the Academic Senate CSU in ways so numerous they
cannot be counted and so profound in their effect that they cannot be measured,
ranging from the minutiae of parliamentary procedure to the scope and future of
the Master Plan for Higher Education in California; and
WHEREAS, Bob Cherny's understanding of and appreciation for
streets and alleys now part of the historical record, for pronoun reference
issues, for both significant and insignificant details of the International
Longshoremen's and Warehousemen's Union and its leader Harry Bridges, and for the
aesthetics of Arial as compared to Times New Roman speak to his readiness and
ability to engage with issues seen by others as lacking in earthshaking
significance; and
WHEREAS, In pursuit of any objective Bob Cherny displays a
fanatic perseverance reminding many of a dog worrying a bone or a zealous
missionary who will not rest or permit a pause of relief until his mission is
completed; and
WHEREAS, Bob Cherny's Senate service spans over two decades
and includes extraordinary contributions to nearly five dozen different committees,
councils, commissions, task forces, panels, study groups, and workgroups, as
well as countless ad hoc entities and legislative hearings; and
WHEREAS, The debt of gratitude owed him by all of his
colleagues in the CSU, and especially those in the Academic Senate CSU, can never
be repaid in full; and
WHEREAS, All who have worked with him have benefited from
his extensive knowledge of higher education in general, the CSU in particular,
and the values and principles that underlie the actions taken in the name of
shared governance; therefore be it
RESOLVED: That the Academic Senate CSU commend and applaud
Bob Cherny many times over for his many acts of service for the CSU and
particularly for the faculty of the CSU; and be it further
RESOLVED: That the Academic Senate CSU pledge to make every
effort to maintain the standard Bob Cherny has set in his years of service to
the University; and be it further
RESOLVED: That the Academic Senate CSU declare its eternal
thanks for the honor of working with Bob Cherny.
