Support for Proposition 47 (Kindergarten-University Public
Education Facilities Act of 2002)

RESOLVED: That the Academic Senate of the California State University
(CSU) support Proposition 47 as a way to fund facilities needed by California's
elementary, middle, and high schools, community colleges, and public
universities; and be it further
RESOLVED: That the Academic Senate CSU urge California voters to
support Proposition 47 in the November 2002 general election; and be it further
RESOLVED: That the Academic Senate CSU urge campus administrators
and academic senates to take immediate action to increase public awareness of
the importance of Proposition 47 and its importance to public education in
California; and be it further
RESOLVED: That this support position be delivered to the Yes on
47 campaign.
RATIONALE: Proposition 47 (Kindergarten-University Public
Education Facilities Act of 2002) allows the state of California to issue
$13.05 billion in general obligation bonds for the construction and renovation
of public elementary, secondary, and higher education facilities throughout
the state. The need for such funding is acute at all levels of education,
which face dramatic enrollment growth over the next decade. The Proposition
specifically would provide $496 million to the CSU.
