Commendation for Former Chair Gene Dinielli

WHEREAS, Gene Dinielli has served the Academic Senate of the
California State University as a statewide Academic Senator representing CSU
Long Beach for 18 years, from 1984 to 2002, as a faculty advocate in his role
as statewide Academic Senate Chair from 1998-2000; and
WHEREAS, During the period 1984-2002, his responsibilities included:
Chair and Vice Chair of the Senate's Academic Affairs Committee, Secretary and
Vice Chair of the statewide Senate; Chair, Advisory Committee to Study Graduate
Education in the CSU; Chair of the General Education-Breadth Advisory
Committee; Chair of the CSU Monterey Bay Faculty Advisory Committee; Liaison
to the Statewide English Council, and many others; and
WHEREAS, At the campus level, Gene chaired the Department of English,
served as Director of the General Honors Program, served as chair of the
School Council, served as Vice Chair of the CSU Long Beach Academic Senate,
to name a few; and
WHEREAS, During the two years of his tenure as Chair of the Academic
Senate CSU, Gene served as a dedicated spokesperson for all CSU faculty, was
effective in securing additional support from the Chancellor's Office to
augment the senate budget to provide assigned time for freshmen senators and
secured support for other projects, including the Shared Governance Study, and
the Lower Division Core Initiatives, as well as many other worthy faculty
projects; and
WHEREAS, Gene has been an eloquent spokesperson on behalf of the
faculty to legislators, to trustees, to campus presidents and academic vice
presidents, and to the chancellor and executive vice chancellors, showing his
commitment to the mission of the California State University and to its faculty,
staff, and students; and
WHEREAS, Gene Dinielli will be sorely missed because he is the
undisputed Senate authority on grammar, proper sentence structure, and correct
writing, punctuation, and pronunciation of English, Latin, and Italian; and
WHEREAS, Senator Dinielli has throughout 18 years scrupulously
observed the rules and decorum specified by General Henry M. Robert; therefore
be it
RESOLVED: That the Academic Senate of the California State University,
your friends and colleagues, wish you continued success, happiness, health,
and collegiality in all your future endeavors.
