RATIONALE: Academic Literacy: A Statement of Competencies Expected of Students
Entering California's Public Colleges and Universities provides a welcomed update of a
much earlier statement on English Competencies. It is the work of an intersegmental task
force that has consulted broadly with faculty in the development of these competencies.
The document also relates the expected competencies to the California Language Arts
Context Standards and the California Education Roundtable Standards. An earlier draft was
revised in light of suggestions made by the Academic Affairs Committee of the Academic
Senate of the California State University. The introduction to this document, which
provides a brief overview of its history and content, is attached.
