Administrative Reviews
AS-2548-01/FA - September 7, 2001
RESOLVED: That the Academic Senate of the California State University (CSU)
express its regret that the numerous concerns stated by faculty during the performance
review of the Chancellor were not substantively addressed by the CSU Board of Trustees
in its evaluation letter of June 4, 2001; and be it further
RESOLVED: That the Academic Senate CSU urge the Board of Trustees to explore--in
collaboration with the Academic Senate CSU--other means of undertaking and presenting the
results of its performance reviews of CSU administrators; and be it further
RESOLVED: That the Academic Senate CSU develop and recommend to the Chancellor
and Board of Trustees policy for review of senior systemwide administrators.
RATIONALE: This resolution encourages collegial efforts on the part of the
Academic Senate of the California State University (CSU), administrators in the CSU, and
the CSU Board of Trustees to design and articulate improved methods of performance review
of senior administrators. The present system of performance reviews of senior system
administrators is incongruent with best practice in higher education, conducted according
to the practice of another field of endeavor, and fails to acknowledge the responses of
individuals who have responded in good faith to requests for comment. The resolution
thus speaks to the disappointment in, and cynicism about, the process now felt by many
faculty in the CSU.
