Resolution in Honor of Senator James Highsmith
AS-2542-01/Fresno - May 10-11, 2001
WHEREAS, Jim Highsmith served on the Academic Senate of the California State University during the administration of four chancellors; and
WHEREAS, Jim Highsmith exhibited extraordinary tenacity to set a record of serving seven terms, a total of over 20 years, as a member of the Academic Senate CSU; and
WHEREAS, Jim Highsmith demonstrated outstanding leadership while serving on many Senate committees, commissions, and task forces; and
WHEREAS, Jim Highsmith served the Senate as its chair from 1995 to 1998; and
WHEREAS, Jim Highsmith led the Senate in the daunting task of producing an exemplary study of the baccalaureate degree; and
WHEREAS, Jim Highsmith led the Senate through the difficult task of completion of obtaining faculty participation in Cornerstones and by chairing one of its major subcommittees; and
WHEREAS, Jim Highsmith's intelligence, knowledge of Senate history, procedures, and "institutional memory" will be sorely missed; and
WHEREAS, Jim Highsmith contributed consistently to extricate the Senate's floor writing from Gordian complications with direct and seemingly simple but elegant solutions; and
WHEREAS, Jim Highsmith has contributed his expertise and experience on faculty governance in the Shared Governance Study; therefore be it
RESOLVED: That the Academic Senate of the California State University extend to Senator James Highsmith its sincere appreciation for his long and productive service and commend him for his many accomplishments on behalf of the entire California State University faculty.
