AS-2214-94/McNeil, Barrena, Buck, Charnofsky, Dinielli, Ediger, Franklin, Gooden, Green, Heisch, Kaiser, Kegley, Kelly, Kersten, Levering, Martin, McIntire, Navari, Owens, Pincu, Resendez, Schaefer, Silvers, Stanley, Spear, Thobaben - May 5-6, 1994
WHEREAS, In AS-1939-90/AA and AS-1980-91/AA, the Academic Senate of the California State University declared its objection to the Department of Defense's policies and regulations excluding non-heterosexual individuals from military ranks, and the requirement that Reserve Officers Training Corps programs must abide by policies which violate CSU policy on non-discrimination; and
WHEREAS, The Academic Senate CSU previously urged campuses to consider the elimination of ROTC programs if Department of Defense policies that discriminate against homosexual and bisexual individuals remain in effect; and
WHEREAS, The Department of Defense has recently adopted a "Don't Ask, Don't Tell, Don't Pursue" policy which does not end the discrimination we have deplored in ROTC programs; and
WHEREAS, California State University, Sacramento and California State University, Hayward have recently announced phase-outs of their respective ROTC programs because of the conflict between Department of Defense's policies and the CSU's non-discrimination policy; and
WHEREAS, These campuses have been supported and led in these actions by Presidents who have defended the values of the University and upheld its policy on non-discrimination; therefore be it
RESOLVED: That the Academic Senate of the California State University express its appreciation to President Donald Gerth and President Norma Rees for their exemplary leadership; and be it further
RESOLVED: That copies of this resolution be forwarded to President Donald Gerth and President Norma Rees, to all other campus presidents, and to the Chancellor.
