SUPPORT FOR SB 654 (BERGESON): "Teacher Credentialing: Streamlining
of Credentialing Requirements"

WHEREAS, SB 654 amends the Education Code to require the Commission on Teacher
Credentialing (CTC) to use challenging, attainable, and accessible "standards of
preparation and competence" as the basis for awarding single subject and multiple
subject teaching credentials; and
WHEREAS, SB654 would also reduce "unnecessary credentials" without compromising
the "high standards for breath and depth" of teacher preparation; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Academic Senate CSU urge the Chancellor and the Board of
Trustees to support SB 654 (Bergeson) in its effort to streamline teacher certification
and to base it on assessment and competence rather than the completion of stipulated
requirements.
