Support For Proposed Changes in the Commission On Extended Education

WHEREAS, During the fifteen-year existence of the Commission on Extended
Education, under the classification both of self-support and state funding, there has
been a great expansion of activities on the campuses that have come to be administered
by the Deans of Extended Education, including such activities as off-campus centers,
international programs, and courses offered through distance learning; and
WHEREAS, Decreases in the level of state funding indicates a need to continue
expanding self-support offerings within the California State University; and
WHEREAS, The Commission has seen the need to revise both its composition and
its "charge" to reflect these changes and to enable the Commission to serve its
constituents more effectively; and
WHEREAS, The Commission has proposed that its name be changed from the Commission
on Extended Education to the Commission on the Extended University; and
WHEREAS, The Commission has proposed that its membership be expanded to include
one more member selected by the statewide Academic Senate, a campus director of
distance learning, an additional campus president, and an additional Vice President
for Academic Affairs; and
WHEREAS, The Commission has revised the Statement of its responsibilities
appearing in the State University Administrative Manual (SUAM) so that it would be more
congruent with current realities; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Academic Senate of the California State University recommend
that the Chancellor and Board of Trustees approve the proposed name change from the
Commission on Extended Education to the Commission on the Extended University, the
proposed changes in its membership, and the proposed changes in its Statement of
Responsibilities appearing in the State University Administrative Manual (SUAM).
