Description
This course examines the basic philosophical concepts of morality and values, representative philosophical ethical theories, and their application to moral problems.

Course Topics
1. Diverse value systems including but not limited to consequentialism and deontology; their assumptions and principles.
2. Critical analysis of the assumptions and principles of various ethical systems.
3. Moral reasoning.
4. Application of various principles and ethical views to moral problems.
5. Comparison of various value systems.
Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
1. Know the major theories of ethics, including those from the Western philosophical tradition;
2. Understand the relationship between theory and practice by using theory to analyze and evaluate problems;
3. Compare and contrast competing ethical perspectives and subject them to critical analysis; and
4. Apply the ethical concepts that are key to contemporary moral issues.
