Class Piano II - TCSU MUS 220

Description

This course includes skills development in playing major and minor scales, diatonic chord progressions, harmonizing melodies, transposition and accompanying, and simple score reading and sight reading of notated music that includes chord symbols.

Prerequisites

Class Piano I or equivalent

Corequisites

Music Theory II and Musicianship II

Minimum Unit Requirements

1 semester unit

Course Topics

Students will perform in class, simple pieces from the standard classical piano teaching literature, appropriate to their level of development. Examples of appropriate pieces include:
1. Bach: Musette in D
2. Bartok; Mikrokosmos, vol. 3
3. Krieger: Minuet in A minor
4. Gurlitt: Allegro non troppo
5. Bach: Little Preludes

Student Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to demonstrate the following knowledge and skills:
1. Play all major and minor scales (three forms), each hand, two octaves up and down.
2. Play chord progressions in major and minor keys using all diatonic chords.
3. Play chord progressions modulating to closely related keys.
4. Play technical exercises appropriate to their level of development.
5. Sight read piano pieces of moderate difficulty.
6. Play any two voices in four-part choral scores of moderate difficulty.
7. Harmonize melodies using primary and secondary triads, including transposition.
8. Accompany fellow students playing simple solo literature for instruments or the voice.
