Description
Methodical development of the intermediate communicative skills in Mandarin Chinese; grammar review; vocabulary building; study of the customs, culture, and the Chinese society in general.
Recommended Preparation
Achieve a proficiency level of Novice-Mid to Intermediate-Low on the ACTFL scale.
Prerequisites
Beginning Mandarin Chinese: First-year sequence
Minimum Unit Requirements
10 semester units
Course Topics
Topics include but are not limited to:
1. Academic issues
2. Certain aspects of Chinese history and culture
3. Current events and general social concerns
4. Leisure, travel, and entertainment
5. Some areas of politics, business and economics
Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
1. Increase their writing ability and engage in conversations beyond the first-year level of proficiency.
2. Achieve a proficiency level of Intermediate-Mid to Intermediate-High on the ACTFL scale.
3. Develop competence in understanding descriptions and information about when, where, who, what, how, and why, and narrations that relate not only to the present but also to the past and the future.
4. Understand a variety of spoken and written texts dealing with a broader spectrum of topics including those mentioned above.
5. Increase control of content and culturally appropriate expressions so that there is a wider range of language use.
