"English and Mathematics Competencies" "Pre-admission
Diagnostic Tools" "Pre-admission Diagnostic Tools" Students preparing for enrollment in the California State University are expected to develop strong English and mathematics skills while in high school. In addition to the minimum college preparatory courses required for admission to CSU, students are encouraged to complete an additional year of high school mathematics and to enroll in the most rigorous English and mathematics courses offered by the high school. In order to improve English competencies, students are encouraged to read as much as possible while in school and during summers. Students should develop writing skills by using high school assignments in English and other subjects to prepare well-developed papers that incorporate critical analysis wherever possible. The Mathematics Diagnostic Testing Program (MDTP), developed jointly by CSU and UC faculty members, offers tests to students from the pre-algebra level to calculus. The MDTP tests are administered by more than 4700 high school and middle school teachers to over 345,000 students. In addition, more than 225,000 California Community College students took the MDTP. MDTP provides services and testing materials to teachers and schools (grades 7-12) at no charge. There are five tests: Algebra Readiness, Geometry Readiness, Second Year Algebra Readiness, Mathematical Analysis Readiness, and Calculus Readiness. Schools may receive further information about the program by contacting: Barbara Walters "Post Admission Competency Requirements" All students entering the CSU must demonstrate proficiency in English and mathematics after admission and prior to enrollment. There are a number of ways to demonstrate competencies by test scores or transferable course completion. Students who are not otherwise exempt on the basis of such tests as the ACT and SAT must take the CSU English Placement Test (EPT) and Entry Level Mathematics (ELM) test. The tests are given several times each year. The test may be taken at the CSU campus most convenient for the student. It need not be taken at the CSU campus where the student will enroll. Please link to one of the following pages for more detailed information. "English Placement Test (EPT)" PURPOSE OF THE EPT The EPT is designed to assess the level of reading and writing skills of entering undergraduate students so that they can be placed in appropriate baccalaureate courses. Those undergraduate students who do not demonstrate college-level skills will be enrolled in courses or programs designed to help them attain these skills. The test is not a condition for admission to the CSU, but it is a condition of enrollment. Students may take the EPT only once. It may not be repeated. New-The fee to take the EPT is $18.00 WHO MUST TAKE THE EPT The CSU English Placement Test (EPT) must be completed by all entering undergraduates, with the exception of those who present proof of one of the following:
Focus on English (EPT) provides information about the English competencies required by the CSU, and it includes a number of frequently asked questions. Focus on English includes samples of the types of questions appearing on the EPT, and there is an essay scoring guide and sample essays. Beginning in fall 1999, students will be able to have their writing skills diagnosed through the CSU Diagnostic Writing Service. Students may access the service for a small fee at the following website: http:www.essayeval.org. Through this service, students may submit essays responding to an EPT essay question, and trained CSU faculty will read their essay, providing students with diagnostic comments about their writing skills. "Entry Level Mathematics (ELM)" PURPOSE OF THE ELM The ELM examination is designed to assess the skill levels of entering CSU students in the areas of mathematics typically covered in three years of rigorous college preparatory mathematics courses in high school. Those undergraduate students who do not demonstrate college-level skills will be directed to courses or programs designed to help them attain these skills. The ELM is not a condition for admission to the CSU. It may be taken only once on each systemwide test date and only once during each of seven time spans established annually. Cost to the student for taking the test is $18. This fee is nonrefundable and subject to change. WHO MUST TAKE THE ELM All entering undergraduates must take the ELM examination before enrolling in a course that satisfies the college-level mathematics requirement of the General Education-Breadth program. Exemptions from the test are given only to those students who can present proof of one of the following:
Focus on Mathematics provides information about the entry level mathematics requirement of the CSU, and it includes answers to a number of frequently asked questions. Focus on Mathematics includes fifty samples of the types of questions appearing on the new ELM test. The ELM Problem Book includes 114 samples of items appearing on the ELM test. The ELM Problem Book is not copyrighted and may be duplicated for distribution. "EPT/ELM Information and Test Registration Booklet" The Calendar for the EPT
and the ELM provides testing dates for each campus. The complete CSU
Information Bulletin PDF is available as a downloadable PDF file in
Adobe® format. The bulletin provides EPT and ELM test information,
the address and telephone number of each CSU campus registration testing
center and a current calendar for EPT and ELM tests with the registration,
test, and reporting dates included. |
